Locomotive Contacts

The main failure modes are arc erosion, contact welding, and resistance drift. Arc erosion removes material from the contact surface each time the circuit opens under load — the arc burns at the point of separation and gradually pits and roughens the contact face. Contact welding occurs when the arc energy is high enough to momentarily melt and fuse the mating surfaces together, preventing the contactor from opening. Resistance drift happens when surface oxidation, contamination, or mechanical wear increases the contact resistance at the interface, generating heat that accelerates further degradation. All three are material and process problems — the right silver alloy, correct substrate machining, and proper pre- and post-solder treatment prevent them.

Material selection depends on four factors: operating voltage and current, switching frequency, arc energy per operation, and the acceptable wear rate over the maintenance interval. AgCu is used for moderate current, low arc energy applications where cost is a factor. AgCdO has excellent arc resistance and anti-welding properties but is being phased out due to cadmium toxicity. AgSnO₂ is the standard cadmium-free replacement — good arc erosion resistance, low welding tendency, suitable for most traction contactor applications. AgW and AgWC are chosen for very high arc energy applications where erosion resistance is the primary requirement. Share your operating parameters and we will recommend the appropriate grade.

The copper substrate is first machined to the required profile, then the silver contact point is soldered onto the mating face. Pre-soldering treatment — cleaning, surface preparation, and flux application — determines how well the silver bonds to the copper. Post-soldering treatment removes flux residues and any oxide layer formed during the solder process. Both steps are critical: poor pre-treatment produces a weak bond that fails under vibration; inadequate post-treatment leaves residues that increase contact resistance and initiate arcing at lower current levels than the design intends. Our controlled process ensures full metallurgical bonding and clean contact surfaces on every part.
