Plated Busbar

Bare copper oxidises on exposure to air, forming a surface layer that increases contact resistance over time — particularly at bolted joints and connection points where current transfer depends on metal-to-metal contact. Plating seals the copper surface against oxidation, maintains stable low contact resistance throughout the service life of the installation, and can add specific properties — solderability, high-temperature stability, or chemical resistance — that bare copper cannot provide. For most permanent electrical installations, plating is not optional; it is the engineering standard.

Tin plating is the most widely used — soft, solderable, corrosion-resistant, and cost-effective. It performs well up to around 100°C and is the standard choice for switchgear, distribution boards, and transformer terminals. Silver plating offers the lowest contact resistance of any coating and excels at high temperatures and high current densities; it is specified for demanding joints in traction equipment, high-frequency systems, and premium switchgear. Nickel plating is harder than both, provides excellent resistance to oxidation, heat up to 500°C, and aggressive chemical environments — chosen when the busbar will be exposed to humidity, industrial chemicals, or elevated temperatures that would degrade tin or silver over time.

Standard plating thickness follows common industry practice: tin at 5–15μm, silver at 5–25μm, nickel at 5–20μm. Thicker coatings extend service life in harsh environments but add cost and can affect dimensional tolerances at contact interfaces. Thinner coatings suit indoor, low-corrosion environments where cost is the priority. We can supply plating to customer-specified thickness with inspection reports confirming coverage and adhesion — please state the required thickness and applicable standard when ordering.

Yes. Full-body plating covers the entire conductor surface and is specified when the busbar will be exposed along its full length to a corrosive or humid environment. Contact-area-only plating concentrates the coating at bolted joint surfaces where oxidation control matters most, reducing cost on long runs. Terminal-only plating is common on flexible busbars where the body is already protected by insulation and only the bare terminal ends require treatment. Specify the coverage zone when ordering and we will mask accordingly.

Tin-plated busbars are used in low and medium voltage switchgear, transformer secondary terminals, motor control centres, UPS systems, and general power distribution. Silver-plated busbars are specified in high-current rectifier installations, traction and rail equipment, RF and power electronics where contact resistance must be minimised, and premium switchgear rated for continuous high current. Nickel-plated busbars are chosen for outdoor installations, marine environments, chemical plants, high-temperature enclosures, and any application where long-term surface integrity under chemical or thermal stress is the primary concern.

Standard documentation includes material certificates confirming copper substrate purity, plating inspection reports with thickness measurements and coverage confirmation, and dimensional inspection records.
